The Compact Viltrox 56mm f/1.7 Portrait Prime Costs Only $139
Chinese lens company Viltrox, known for its impressive and affordable lenses, has unveiled the 56mm f/1.7 compact prime for APS-C mirrorless cameras.
The autofocus lens for Fujifilm X Series and APS-C Nikon Z mirrorless cameras features 11 elements across nine groups, including four ED lenses and three pieces of high-refractive-index glass.
Viltrox promises fast, accurate, and quiet autofocus performance through an STM focus motor. The lens can focus as close as 0.55 meters (1.8 feet), resulting in a maximum magnification of 0.11x. The lens is internally focusing, meaning its length doesn’t change with the focus distance.
Speaking of size, the lens is relatively compact given its focal length and aperture combination. The lens is 54.7 millimeters (2.2 inches) long and has a 52mm filter thread. The weight varies slightly based on the selected lens mount, with the X-mount version weighing just 171 grams (six ounces) and the Z version tipping the scales at 187 grams (6.6 ounces).
The lens has an aluminum alloy bayonet and offers some weather sealing, particularly at the front. There is no obvious gasket at the bayonet end of the lens, although it should be suitable for use outdoors, even in somewhat inclement conditions.
Viltrox says its new prime lens works with specialized autofocus features on mirrorless cameras, including face—and eye-detect autofocus. The bayonet also has a USB-C port, allowing users to easily upgrade the lens firmware at home.
Additional features include minimized focus breathing for video, low optical distortion, and promised soft bokeh. While only real-world performance can verify Viltrox’s claims, early reviews are very positive, suggesting that like other Viltrox lenses PetaPixel has used, the new 56mm f/1.7 far outperforms its accessible price point.
Speaking of price, the Viltrox AF 56mm f/1.7 lens costs only $139, which is an excellent deal. While Nikon doesn’t have a comparable lens in its Nikkor Z lineup, for Fujifilm X cameras, there’s the Fujifilm XF 56mm f/1.2 R for $999 and the Sigma 56mm f/1.4 DC DN Contemporary for $429. There is also another option from Viltrox itself, the AF 56mm f/1.4 for $299. For $139, photographers trade a bit concerning the aperture but save a decent chunk of change and get a smaller, lighter prime lens.
